A sangeet is a pre-wedding night of music and dance, so wear something festive, colourful and easy to move in. For women, that usually means a light lehenga, a sharara or anarkali set, or a pre-draped saree. For men, a kurta with a Nehru jacket, a bandhgala or a smart Indo-Western set. Sparkle, mirror work and bright colours suit the event far better than they would at the main ceremony.
The one thing to check before you choose is the invitation: some sangeets are formal ballroom evenings with a theme, others are relaxed gatherings at home. Below: what happens at a sangeet, how to read the dress code, outfit ideas for women and men, what to wear if you are dancing in a performance, advice for first-time guests, and colours to avoid.
What happens at a sangeet?
The word sangeet is Sanskrit for “sung together”. It is a pre-wedding celebration from Punjab and North India. Historically, it was a women-only event: the women of both families gathered a few days before the wedding to sing folk songs and dance, including the Punjabi folk dance giddha, to celebrate the bride.
Modern sangeets are usually co-ed and much larger. Rumela Sen, lead editor of WeddingWire India, told The Knot that couples now often host the night together and perform choreographed Bollywood numbers with friends and family. Sangeets frequently have themes such as a Bollywood night, a Sufi night or a bhangra night, and the event has spread to couples from many parts of India and the diaspora.
What this means for you as a guest:
- It is a long evening. The Knot puts most modern sangeets at four to five hours.
- You will probably dance. Even if you are not in a performance, the dance floor usually opens afterwards.
- It usually comes a day or two before the wedding. The order varies; in Sen’s typical sequence it falls between the mehndi and the haldi.
- Gifts are not expected. According to Sen, guests usually give gifts on the wedding day or at the reception, not at the sangeet.
If you are going to a Pakistani wedding, the comparable music-and-dance nights are usually the dholki and mehndi. Our guide to what to wear to a Pakistani wedding covers those events.
Reading the invitation: what’s the dress code?
| The invitation says | What it usually means | Women | Men |
| Festive, Indian festive or traditional | Full Indian wear, colourful and embellished | Lehenga, sharara or anarkali set, saree | Kurta with Nehru jacket, bandhgala |
| Cocktail or Indo-Western | Dressy, with room for fusion and Western pieces | Indo-Western set, embellished gown, pre-draped saree | Bandhgala or Indo-Western jacket, dark suit with Indian detail |
| A theme (Bollywood, Sufi, bhangra, all-white, a colour) | Follow the theme; it overrides general advice | Match the theme colour or era | Match the theme colour or era |
| No dress code, or a home sangeet | Smart and festive, but lighter | Kurta set or simple sharara | Kurta with trousers, optional jacket |
If you cannot tell, ask the couple or the person who invited you. It is a normal question, and it saves you from being either overdressed or underdressed for four hours.
What women can wear to a sangeet

- Light lehenga. A skirt, blouse and dupatta set is a classic sangeet choice. For dancing, pick a lighter lehenga in georgette, chiffon or net rather than a heavily embroidered silk one, and keep the flare to a size you can spin in without tripping.
- Sharara or gharara set. Wide, flared trousers with a short kurti look like a lehenga in photos but let you move like you are in trousers. Our guide explains how a sharara differs from a gharara.
- Anarkali. A long, flared kurta that swirls when you turn. Choose ankle length or slightly shorter if you plan to dance.
- Pre-draped saree. A saree stitched into shape, so there are no pleats to come undone mid-dance. A good option if you love the look of a saree but have never draped one.
- Indo-Western. A cape top with palazzos, a crop top with a flared skirt, a dhoti-style pant with a long jacket, or an embellished jumpsuit. Suits cocktail-style sangeets.
Details that make the difference: sequins, mirror work and gota catch the light on a dance floor; mid-weight fabrics such as georgette move well and do not crush. Wear flat or low-heeled juttis or embellished sandals; you will be on your feet for hours. Pin your dupatta securely, or belt it at the waist so it stays put while you dance. Our dupatta guide has step-by-step drapes for dancing.
What men can wear to a sangeet

- Kurta with a Nehru jacket. The most versatile option: a plain or textured kurta with a contrasting, sleeveless Nehru jacket and churidar or straight trousers. It works for almost any sangeet dress code.
- Bandhgala. A structured, high-collared jacket worn with trousers. Formal and sharp, good for a ballroom or a cocktail-style sangeet.
- Indo-Western sets. An asymmetric or long jacket over a kurta or fitted shirt, or a printed kurta with trousers. Suits a theme or a fashion-forward crowd.
- Kurta pajama. A plain kurta with pajama or churidar. Best for a home sangeet or a relaxed evening; add a stole or a jacket to dress it up.
Details: save a full sherwani for the wedding day, when the groom often wears one. Choose mojaris or juttis, or smart loafers with Indo-Western wear. Colour is welcome: jewel tones, pastels and prints all work. A pocket square or a stole is an easy way to coordinate with a partner.
If you are performing in a dance

Many sangeets include choreographed performances by friends and family, sometimes in coordinated outfits. If you are in one:
- Ask about a group colour or outfit early. Groups often pick a shared colour or buy matching pieces, and late orders from India or Pakistan can take weeks.
- Rehearse in the outfit, or at least in the shoes. Spins, lifts and floor moves expose any problem with hem length, a heavy dupatta or loose jewellery.
- Choose lighter fabric and less jewellery than you would for sitting. Long earrings catch on dupattas; heavy necklaces bounce.
- Bring a second outfit or a lighter layer if the performance comes before dinner and dancing. Some performers change after their number.
First sangeet? Advice for guests who aren’t South Asian
Many guests at a sangeet are attending their first one, and plenty are not South Asian. A few points that answer the most common worries:
- You can wear Indian clothes. Couples and their families generally welcome guests who dress in Indian wear for the sangeet; it is seen as joining in, not as costume. Ask the couple if you would like reassurance, or ask a friend from the family to help you choose and dress.
- You don’t have to. A colourful cocktail dress, a dressy jumpsuit, or a suit with a bright shirt or tie is fine if Indian wear isn’t for you. Avoid anything that looks like office wear.
- Buy, rent or borrow. Indian wear rental services operate in the US, UK and Canada, and friends of the couple are often happy to lend. If you buy online, allow time for delivery and alterations.
- Get help with the drape. A lehenga or saree dupatta is the most common thing to go wrong. A pre-draped saree, a sharara set or a belted dupatta avoids the problem.
- Join the dance floor. Nobody expects you to know the steps.
Colours to avoid at a sangeet
Sangeets are among the most colourful events of a wedding, so you have more freedom than at the ceremony itself. A few cautions still apply:
- Bridal red. Heavily embellished red is the traditional choice for many North Indian brides, so avoid an outfit that could be mistaken for the bride’s. Red with a different style or a lighter touch is usually fine at a sangeet.
- All white. In many Hindu communities white is associated with funerals and widowhood, so all-white outfits are traditionally avoided at weddings. The exception is a white-themed sangeet, a theme Sen highlighted for couples in 2022: if the invitation asks for white, wear it.
- All black. Some families see head-to-toe black as too sombre for a celebration; others don’t mind it, especially at a cocktail-style evening. Add colour or embellishment if you are unsure.
- The couple’s colours. If the couple have announced their own outfit colours, choose something different.
Practical checklist
- Check the dress code or theme on the invitation.
- Ask whether you are in a performance, and whether there is a group colour.
- Choose an outfit you can dance in for several hours.
- Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes, or bring a pair to change into.
- Secure your dupatta, stole or saree pleats with pins.
- Keep jewellery secure and not too long.
- Bring a layer for outdoor or late-night venues.
Frequently asked questions
What is the dress code for a sangeet?
Usually festive Indian or Indo-Western wear: colourful, embellished and easy to move in. Follow the invitation. A theme or “cocktail” dress code changes what is appropriate.
What is a good guest dress for a sangeet ceremony?
A light lehenga, a sharara or anarkali set, a pre-draped saree, or an Indo-Western outfit. If you prefer Western wear, a colourful, dressy cocktail dress works at most sangeets.
What colours should I not wear to a sangeet?
Avoid a heavily embellished red that looks bridal, and be cautious with all-white or all-black outfits unless the sangeet has a white or black theme. Avoid the colour the couple have chosen for themselves.
What do non-Indian guests wear to a sangeet?
Many wear Indian outfits, which are generally welcomed. Others wear colourful cocktail dresses or suits. Either is appropriate; what matters is that the outfit is festive and lets you dance.
What should a man wear to a sangeet?
A kurta with a Nehru jacket is the safest choice. A bandhgala suits more formal evenings, and an Indo-Western set suits a fashion-forward or themed sangeet. Leave the sherwani for the wedding.
Can I wear a saree to a sangeet?
Yes. For dancing, choose a light georgette or chiffon saree, pin the pleats and pallu securely, or wear a pre-draped saree.
Should I bring a gift to the sangeet?
Generally, no. Gifts are usually given on the wedding day or at the reception.
What is the difference between a sangeet and a mehndi?
The mehndi centres on applying henna to the bride’s hands and feet; the sangeet centres on music, dance and performances. Some families combine them into one night.
The short version
A sangeet is a long, high-energy night of music and dance before the wedding. Wear something colourful and festive that you can dance in for hours: a light lehenga, sharara, anarkali or pre-draped saree for women, a kurta with a Nehru jacket or a bandhgala for men. Check the invitation for a theme, wear comfortable shoes, and avoid looking like the bride.
